DiRT 4- PC crashes, errors, bugs, black screen, Rain Stage crash, error login to Rain Net, fps drops, controller issues and other performance fixes

Another entry in to the Codemaster’s rally racing DiRT franchise, DiRT 4 is the latest rally style racing game that got released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game is more compared to the previously released sim-racing DiRT Rally and have received fair reviews on Steam. But to my opinion, it falls in between the sim racer DiRT Rally and the arcade style DiRT 3. Though the graphics are a little let down but performance wise, the game is doing good. Players compete in timed stage events on tarmac and off-road terrain in varying weather conditions. Rally stages span across five locations: Fitzroy in Australia, Tarragona in Spain, Michigan in the United States, Värmland in Sweden and Powys in Wales. For those who are facing issues on PC, go through the workarounds below.

1. DiRT 4 PC- Crash at startup/ CTD/ Game not responding/ APPCRASH/ Black screen fix:-

  • Update your Nvidia and AMD drivers to the latest versions.
  • Disable antivirus/firewall or add game to the exception list of the antivirus software.
  • Game won’t launch:- For this, you need to ‘Verify Integrity of Game Cache on Steam’ which may fix any errors due to game files corruption and re-download any missing files. Also, restarting Steam can sometimes fix the issue.
  • Crash to Desktop (CTD) on Triple Screen:- Firstly, make sure your GPU drivers are up to date. Also, try playing in Windowed mode. If that doesn’t help, play the game only in one screen till you have reached Dirt Academy. This seems to have worked for few people.
  • Disable all recording softwares like Fraps, MSI AfterBurner, D3DGear etc. They may conflict with your DirectX Direct3D settings resulting in a crash.
  • If your game is crashing while going full screen, try playing in windowed mode. Also disable Steam Cloud.
  • Black screen issue- Well this issue can be due to lot of reasons. First of all, you should check that the in-game resolution matches the resolution supported by your display device so that there should not be any conflict. If you are using HDMI, try unplugging the HDMI cable from TV and launch the game. Wait a few mins before replugging the HDMI cable back into the TV. Also running the game in windowed mode can help.
  • Registry clean using CCleaner can also fix some of the crashes. You can download CCleaner from here.
  • For any DLL error (MSVCP100.dll and MSVCR100.dll not Found) or APPCRASH issue, it is recommended to do a clean install of Directx. Or, you can download the missing DLLs from here and paste them in the game directory. Install all executables from the Redist folder of your Game’s directory.

2. DiRT 4 PC: Rain Stage crash fix:-

This was a common problem to many players. As a workaround, you can disable mirrors which seemed to fix the issue for many. Also, verify game files and download any latest patches that is available.

3. DiRT 4 PC- Low FPS/ Stuttering/ freezes/ lags fixes:-

  • Updating your Nvidia and AMD GPU drivers is a must.
  • If you are facing optimization issues, severe lags or stutters; you can try turning down shadows, MSAA and adjust other graphics settings. Updated GPU drivers is mandatory.
  • For AMD users, disable Raptr from task manager. Disable any other intensive applications that may be running in background. Also try setting ‘Tessellation mode’ to 8x/16x and 'Texture Filtering Quality' to Performance from your latest Crimson edition Radeon software to fix frame rate drops.
  • For Nvidia users, go into your control panel 3d settings. Make sure that ‘Power Management Mode’ option should be set to ‘Prefer Maximum Performance’.
  • If you are experiencing screen flickering or frame-pacing issues, disable Crossfire/SLI and run the game using a single GPU. Also, disable Steam Overlay by right clicking the game in Steam Library and then go to Game Properties.
  • Turn off all overlaying softwares and disable any recording softwares like Fraps, D3DGear, MSI Afterburner etc. Disable ShadowPlay.
  • If your PC is getting overheated, try keeping the Vsync ON while lowering all other settings. Disable any kind of overclocking.
  • Disable third party background apps and set High Priority for the game in Task Manager.

4. DiRT 4 PC- Not able to login to Racenet:-

Restart your WiFi router and disable your antivirus/firewall which may be blocking the game. Also, you can add the game to the whitelist section of your Windows Firewall.

5. DiRT 4 PC- Controller issue:-

If you are facing issue with controller navigation, you should disconnect all your controllers and reconnect it. Unplug your mouse and replug it. Restart game and it should work. Also, check whether the drivers for your controller are properly installed or not.

Heads Up: DiRT 4 is available on Steam for US $59.99.
