Homefront: The Revolution- PC errors, crashes, startup issues, black screen, low fps, stuttering, no sound, performance fixes and workarounds

BY AMIT BARAN ROY   |   Homefront: The Revolution is the latest open world first person shooter developed by Dambuster Studios which is a sequel to the original Homefront of 2011. Unlike its predecessor which garnered lots of success, the current version has been criticized heavily with lots of negative reviews on Steam. Much of these is due to the poor stability of the game on PC and the consistent performance issues such as the excessive frame drops. While we await official patch fixes from Deep Silver, the following workarounds can be helpful for the common issues that fans may be experiencing. Before that, don’t miss to check the system requirements for the game below.

1. Homefront: The Revolution PC- Crash at startup/ CTD/ Game not responding/ APPCRASH/ Black screen fix:-

  • Update your GPU drivers to the latest versions if you haven’t already.
  • Disable antivirus/firewall or add game to the exception list of the antivirus software.
  • If the game is crashing while going fullscreen, try disabling any recording softwares like D3DGear, Fraps, MSI AfterBurner etc. You can also try your luck running the game in Windowed mode.
  • If the game is crashing right at startup or you are getting an error as ‘Missing Executable’, try downloading the latest update of the game and restart Steam.
  • Black screen issue- You should check that the in-game resolution matches the resolution supported by your display device so that there should not be any conflict. If you are using HDMI, try unplugging the HDMI cable from TV and launch the game. Wait a few mins before replugging the HDMI cable back into the TV. If nothing works, try windowed mode.
  • Registry clean using CCleaner can also fix some of the crashes. You can download CCleaner from here.
  • For any DLL error or APPCRASH issue, it is recommended to do a clean install of Directx. Or, you can download the missing DLLs from here and paste them in the game directory.

2. Homefront: The Revolution PC- “Failed to Run Install Script” Error Fix:-

Make sure your Windows is fully up to date. Also, try re-installing Microsoft visual C++ redistributable 2005.

3. Homefront: The Revolution PC - Low FPS/ Lags/ Stuttering fix:-

  • This goes without saying that both Nvidia and AMD GPU should be updated to their latest drivers.
  • Turn down graphics settings in-game if you are on a low end rig. Disable Steam overlay and other recording softwares as mentioned above.
  • For AMD users, disable Raptr from task manager. Disable any other intensive applications that may be running in background. Also try setting ‘Tessellation mode’ to 8x/16x and 'Texture Filtering Quality' to Performance from your latest Crimson edition Radeon software to fix frame rate drops.
  • For Nvidia users, go into your control panel 3d settings. Make sure that ‘Power Management Mode’ option should be set to ‘Prefer Maximum Performance’.
  • AMD users should also make sure that their game is set to ‘High Performance’. You can do this by opening AMD Radeon control panel, click on preferences at the bottom, open Additional Radeon settings and then navigate to Switchable application settings.
  • Nvidia users should note that SLI is not supported with this game. But there is a workaround to enable it that boosts the game performance by some folds.
    - Download the Nvidia Inspector
    - Copy the SLI compatibility bits from the Ryse: Son Of Rome section to the Homefront: The Revolution one. This is for SLI compatibility bits (DX10 + DX11) and the value in question is “0x080040F5.”
  • You can also try adding this commandline ‘-USEALLAVAILABLECORE’ to launch options of the game that can help boost performance.
  • Disable Super Sampling and Vsync in game.
  • Memory Leaks:- Users can experience severe memory leaks with low RAM (less than 6GB). Most of the in game freezes can also be attributed to low available RAM. To fix it to some extent, try the next steps. Right click MyComputer > Properties > AdvancedSystemSettings > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Change Virtual Memory. Set page file for C drive to be anything high (say 5GB), then it may fix majority of the lag.

4. Homefront: The Revolution PC- No sound Fix:-

  • Go to Control panel and Open ‘Sound’.
  • Configure and set up 2.1 stereo.

5. Homefront: The Revolution PC- Hard Freeze after ‘Welcome into the Resistance’ mission:-

Currently, we are awaiting an official patch release to fix this issue. In the meantime, you can also check out the Reddit and Steam forum to stay up to date with any fix.

6. Homefront: The Revolution PC- Mouse Acceleration fix:-

Players may face an odd mouse movement while playing. This can be fixed by adding the following lines in system.cfg file.
CVar: i_mouse_smooth=0.0
CVar: i_mouse_accel=0.0

7. Homefront: The Revolution PC- Save game location:-

For those who are having difficulty in finding the save game files, you can head over to C: > Users > username > Saved Games > homefront2.

Heads Up:- Homefront: The Revolution PC is available on Steam for $59.99.
