Need For Speed Payback- PC crashes, errors, DirectX issues, stuttering, freezing, audio bugs and other performance fixes

Need For Speed Payback is finally out for PCs and Consoles worldwide. Developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts, it is the twenty-third installment in Need For Speed franchise. As expected by its system requirements, the game is pretty heavy for medium scale rigs and even the GTX 1080 beasts are having a hard time to hit the constant 60 FPS at Ultra settings. There are frame drops and occasional lag spikes which caused the game to get a lower review score. Although EA technical support team is constantly helping the community to fix the reported issues, below are some of the workarounds for the common issues that are faced by many players. Before moving down to the fixes, have a quick look at the system requirements for the game. We recommend that you meet the system requirements as close as possible to have an enriching experience with the game.

1. Need For Speed Payback PC- Crash at startup/ CTD/ Game not responding/ APPCRASH/ Black screen fix:-

  • Update your Nvidia and AMD drivers to the latest versions.
  • Disable antivirus/firewall or add game to the exception list of the antivirus software.
  • If your game is crashing while going full screen, try playing in windowed mode. If your game is crashing during the first heist mission, make sure that your GPU is not overclocked. AMD users can also try rolling back to 17.7.2 WHQL drivers.
  • Crash to Desktop when campaign starts- For this issue, make sure that you reinstall Visual C++ 2013 and 2015 using the redistributable installers that came with the game. Disable Windows game mode: Press WINDOWS key -> Click on the "Settings" button -> Click on "Gaming" -> Click on "Game Mode" -> Disable it -> Close the window. Also, ensure that Profile folder exists on your computer. You can check it in C:/../Documents/ Need For Speed(TM) Payback. If the above steps don’t help, try disabling antivirus software and perform a clean boot before starting the game.
  • Black screen issue- Well this issue can be due to lot of reasons. First of all, you should check that the in-game resolution matches the resolution supported by your display device so that there should not be any conflict. If you are using HDMI, try unplugging the HDMI cable from TV and launch the game. Wait a few mins before replugging the HDMI cable back into the TV. Also running the game in windowed mode can help.
  • Registry clean using CCleaner can also fix some of the crashes. You can download CCleaner from here.
  • For any DLL error or APPCRASH issue, it is recommended to do a clean install of Directx. Or, you can download the missing DLLs from here and paste them in the game directory. Install all executables from the Redist folder of your Game’s directory.

2. Need For Speed Payback PC- Black Screen with Background Audio fix:-

This issue mostly arises if any screen recording software like Fraps, OBS, ShadowPlay or video conversation software like Team Viewer, Skype, Discord, Slack etc is running in Background. Close all such programs and the game should run fine. If this is not the case, then try to run the game with admin rights. Also, running the game in Windowed mode fixes this issue as well.

3. Need For Speed Payback PC- Game won’t launch:-

If you are unable to launch NFS Playback from Origin, it is advised that you update your Origin Client to the latest version- 10.5.5.6040. Then do a clean install of the game and it should start properly.

  • If you are facing optimization issues, severe lags or stutters; you can try turning down shadows, Anti-Aliasing and adjust other graphics settings. Updated GPU drivers is mandatory.
  • For those of you facing random freezing in game, there is a workaround to disable Game Mode for Windows 10 if it is active. Press WINDOWS Key -> Click on settings (gear symbol) -> Gaming -> Game Mode -> Disable It.
  • For AMD users, disable Raptr from task manager. Disable any other intensive applications that may be running in background. Also try setting ‘Tessellation mode’ to 8x/16x and 'Texture Filtering Quality' to Performance from your latest Crimson edition Radeon software to fix frame rate drops.
  • For Nvidia users, go into your control panel 3d settings. Make sure that ‘Power Management Mode’ option should be set to ‘Prefer Maximum Performance’.
  • If you are experiencing screen flickering or frame-pacing issues, disable Crossfire/SLI and run the game using a single GPU. Currently, many users are facing performance issues while using multi GPU.
  • Turn off all overlaying softwares and disable any recording softwares like Fraps, D3DGear, MSI Afterburner etc. Disable ShadowPlay.
  • If your PC is getting overheated, try keeping the Vsync ON while lowering all other settings. Disable any kind of overclocking.
  • Disable third party background apps and set High Priority for the game in Task Manager.

You can use Nvidia Experience to adjust your in game graphics setting to high preset. Make sure that your Nvidia GPU is running under Nvidia Control panel.
