Quantum Break: PC crashes, errors, Game not starting, low fps, lags, freezes, stuttering, No sound, cross play issues and performance fixes

BY AMIT BARAN ROY   |   Quantum Break is finally released for PC and Xbox One. But to our fear, the PC port is turning out to be yet another disappointment from Microsoft. The PC version of the game is strictly available for only Windows 10 users with DirectX 12 support and is available only at Windows Store. Many users are experiencing lots of graphics, stability and framerate related issues on launch day and rumors are indicating this game to be a pre patched version of Arkham Knight. While Remedy Games is working hard to fix most of the issues as soon as possible, here is a list of possible workarounds that may help to resolve some of the known issues. But before that, it is recommended that users should have a good look at the system requirements of the game.

Minimum Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)

1. Quantum Break- Crash at startup/ Game not responding/ APPCRASH/ Black Screen fix:-

  • GPU drivers must be updated to the latest version. Sometimes a clean driver install can also solve the crashing issues. Also make sure that you have the latest Windows 10 updates installed.
  • Check that your antivirus/firewall is not blocking the game.
  • Make sure that the dedicated GPU is in use for all laptop users.
  • Registry clean using CCleaner can also fix some of the crashes. You can download CCleaner from here.
  • For any DLL error or APPCRASH issue, it is recommended to do a clean install of Directx. Or, you can download the missing DLLs from here and paste them in the game directory.
  • "File IO Failure" error notice and the game doesn't launch: It's an issue caused by having a Unicode based user account. Remedy Games is currently working on it to fix the issue as soon as possible.
  • For black screen issue, you should check that the in-game resolution matches the resolution supported by your display device so that there should not be any conflict.
  • You can also try running the game in Windowed mode.
  • If nothing helps, try re-installing the game in a different Windows user account.

2. Quantum Break- Low FPS/ Lags/ Stuttering/ Freeezing:-

It should be noted that the game’s system requirements are too steep for most of the notebooks and desktops. One must have a high end dedicated gaming PC to enjoy the game at max settings. But still there are reports that even users with GTX 980Ti are not able to run this game at the max settings. The following workarounds may help to improve the experience by a bit.

  • Make sure the GPU drivers are up to date and your system is plugged in while playing. AMD users should get the latest Crimson edition Radeon 16.4.1 Hotfix drivers for this game.
  • Disable Gsync and Vsync. Lower in-game resolution and other graphics settings.
  • Film Grain Effect- The film grain effect becomes heavy on some TVs when the sharpness setting is too high. Also check if the cloud save has picked up your Xbox One game version gamma/brightness settings and pumped up the PC settings simultaneously.
  • Multi-GPU setups are currently not supported by DirectX/ UWP. So, SLI or Crossfire will not work right now.
  • For AMD users, disable Raptr from task manager. Disable any other intensive applications that may be running in background. Also try setting ‘Tessellation mode’ to 8x/16x from your Crimson edition Radeon 16.4.1 Hotfix software and turn off Vsync there too.
  • For Nvidia users, set the ‘Power Management Mode’ option to ‘Prefer Maximum Performance’.
  • In Task Manager, set High Priority for Quantum Break process thread.
  • Disable any recording software like MSI afterburner, Fraps, Dxtory, D3DGear to maximize performance.
  • Memory Leaks:- Users can experience severe memory leaks with low RAM (less than 8GB). Most of the in game freezes can also be attributed to low available RAM. To fix it to some extent, try the next steps. Right click MyComputer > Properties > AdvancedSystemSettings > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Change Virtual Memory. Set page file for C drive to be anything high (say 5GB), then it may fix majority of the lag.
  • Also note that overlay software for broadcasting/streaming, benchmarking or mods is currently not supported by UWP.

3. Quantum Break- No sound fix:-

This issue can arise if your speaker setup is stereo and Xbox One systems audio output is set as surround sound or vice versa. You need to go to your Xbox One settings, check audio and set force stereo audio output for stereo speakers or vice versa.

4. Quantum Break- Savegame issue:-

Make sure you're running the latest version of Windows 10. Older versions have a bug which might cause a savegame error when playing a game with multiple user accounts on the same PC. To be sure, switch your account before signing in to the Xbox app and launching the game.

5. Quantum Break- Not received pre-order bonus item Windows 10 code:-

Microsoft states on the game product page on Xbox One marketplace that they will deliver codes to customers via Xbox system message within 7-10 days after the game has launched, meaning Friday 15th of April latest.

6. Quantum Break- How to quit the game:-

You can exit Quantum Break just like any Windows 10 application, move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner and the regular [X] should appear.

7. Quantum Break- Cross platform play issues and workarounds:-

Cross platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 will help you to sync your save game between both the platforms so that when you played for some time on say Xbox One, you can continue next time from the same point on Windows 10. Users may be experiencing issues with the cross play, the following workarounds may help.

  • Make sure that you are fully connected and the Network settings are working properly. You can troubleshoot Xbox One Network settings and Windows 10 network connections.
  • Wait for some more time after your game has saved successfully as it still may be syncing with your existing game save. If you get a warning that your other device is taking a while to upload data to the cloud, this means that syncing is still taking place.
  • Restart the game which will trigger an automatic cloud save of your game.

Heads Up:- Quantum Break is available on Windows Store at $59.99.
